Oceananic Sience Center Mindelo

The Mindelo Marine Research Center, a joint project by the clients GeoMar and INDP, was built on the Cape Verdean island of São Vicente. It is an industrial building that also serves as a state-of-the-art research center and combines the requirements of functionality and sustainability.

Challenges

Integrating the desired functions - workshops, laboratories and offices - into a compact building was one of the biggest challenges. Added to this was the requirement to design the building with a particular focus on sustainability. Natural resources such as sunlight and sea breezes were used specifically for ventilation and energy generation. The implementation of this project shows how state-of-the-art research and environmental awareness can be successfully combined.
